I SCRAPED MY FINGER TODAY

FOLDING FRESH COTTON INTO RUSTED BEDSPRINGS

AND I REMEMBERED THAT MOMENT BEFORE I SETTLED

WHEN FLANNEL FLOATED JUST ABOVE THE MATTRESS

WHAT LIGHT BREATH HELD IT THERE ?

I WOULD HAVE TUCKED MY FACE IN ITS WHISPER

I scraped my fingers today,
folding fresh cotton
into rusted bedsprings.
And I remembered that moment
before it settled,
when flannel floated
just above the mattress.
What light breath
held it there?
I would have tucked my face in its whisper.
